Brazil Week NYC Honors Women Achievements
The 7th annual celebration of the Brazilian culture will
take place from August 25th to 30th in New York City

New York, August 12th 2014 - As Brazil celebrates its independence in the first week of September, the country and its diverse culture and people come to center stage during the Brazil Week NYC.

The event will be held from August 25th to 30th in different locations (see event schedule below) and will feature several activities, including art exhibits, musical performances, movie screenings, lectures, tourism promotion and the already traditional Lavagem da Rua 46 (Cleansing of 46th Street), a parade and cultural festival that has attracted thousands of visitors to 46th Street - Little Brazil - in past years.

This year, the Brazil Week NYC will honor women who made or are making a difference in Brazil's history and society. Under the theme “Women with Power”, the event will hold two cultural exhibitions, “Women with Power” and Women with Axé”, shedding light on the Brazilian woman’s struggle for equal rights. The two events will display a photo exhibition and the latter will hold a panel discussion of Ritual Candomblé dresses.

On Saturday, August 30th, the week of celebrations culminates with the Lavagem da Rua 46th. The parade, which goes along 46th Street from Times Square to Madison Avenue, brings a mix of rhythms from several parts of Brazil, including “samba”, “frevo” and “maracatu”. The musical performances will be led by the Bahia group Alavontê and Lucy Alves, a forró singer from the TV show The Voice Brasil.

All events are free and opened to the public.

Brazil Week NYC is produced by the non-profit organization SM Viva Brasil Inc and Homagic, Inc, in partnership with the newspaper The Brasilians. The exhibition “Women with Axé” is produced in partnership with the U.S. Senator Bill Perkins and the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute.
